Golden Eagles Clinch Their Spot In CCAA Tourney

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team will be making its return to the California Collegiate Athletic Association after winning its way in on Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles turned back Cal Poly Humboldt, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 in University Gym to clinch its spot. Cal State LA joins Cal State San Bernardino as the only programs to reach the tournament in all nine seasons of its existence.

Cal State LA (15-9, 10-7 CCAA) pulled to within one-half game of third-place Stanislaus State with the victory. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the tournament and only one spot remains unclaimed.

CCAA career kills leader Emily Elliott led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills and one ace, while Zuhal Cetin had 11 kills and 14 digs and hit at a .381 percentage. 

Awelina Fakalata led Cal Poly Humboldt (8-17, 4-13 with nine kills and two aces.

Jameson Sanders had 10 digs, while Ashlyn Beaver, Arielle Chandler and Neely Craig combined for 38 set assiss.

Cal State LA had a 43-34 edge in kills and hit at a .286 percentage to just .167 for Cal Poly Humboldt. The 'Jacks had a 5-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had six aces and 14 service errors, while Cal Poly Humboldt had five aces and eight errors.

The Golden Eagles broke a 20-20 tie in the opening set after kills by Elliott and Cetin and an attack error and got to set point at 24-21 after a kill from Rachel Lowe. A service ace by Fakalata brought the 'Jacks to within 24-23, but a kill by Elliott ended the set.

The Golden Eagles fought off a set point at 24-23 with an attack error and then won the set with back-to-back kills from Cetin.

Cal State LA closed out the match in the third set, opening up a 23-15 lead and holding off a late bid by the 'Jacks.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season at Saturday at 3 p.m. on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will honor Matalasi Danielson, Haley Roundtree and Emily Elliott in pre-match ceremonies.
