Golden Eagles Climb To Second With Win Over Otters

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team has climbed into second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament thanks to a big road win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles got goals from Sofia Orozco and Jassmin Ortiz and edged the Otters, 2-1, in an important conference match at Cardinale Stadium. Cal State LA (9-3-4, 6-3-1 CCAA) moved past Stanislaus State and into second place after the Warriors fell at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.

With the victory, the Golden Eagles also clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for an 11th straight season. Cal State LA, the 2022, 2014 and 2009 champions, leads Stanislaus State by one point and Cal State East Bay by two points heading into the final regular-season game of the season on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles completed a perfect week and surged from 13 points to 19 with wins over San Francisco State on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.

Cal State LA fully welcomed back Ortiz, the Golden Eagles' talented midfielder, who returned this weekend after missing two games due to injury. She made a huge difference for the Golden Eagles and had game-winning goals in both games this weekend.

She earned All-West Region and All-CCAA honors last year as a junior and the Golden Eagles dearly missed her when she suffered a season-ending injury at Cal Poly Humboldt and was out for Cal State LA's final five games, including all four CCAA and NCAA postseason games.

Cal State LA won its third straight game and extended its unbeaten streak to four, earning 10 points over that stretch to move into tournament contention.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute off a corner kick by Reyna Roman that was headed off the post by Jaclyn Orozco. Sofia Orozco headed the rebound into the goal to put her team ahead. It was Sofia Orozco's first goal of the season and the first career assist for Jaclyn Orozco, the Golden Eagles' defensive extraordinaire.

The Golden Eagles just missed a chance to go up 2-0 in the 61st minute when a blast from Ortiz went off the crossbar and stayed out.

The Otters then tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute when Tiger Rendon scored on a free kick for her third goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles, though, regained the lead three minutes later courtesy of Ortiz, who headed in a pass from Presli Dillon for the go-ahead score. Cal State LA goalkeeper Taesja Paopao made three brilliant saves to preserve the lead, including a pair in the final two minutes. She made five of her six saves in the second half.

Cal State LA defenders Jaclyn Orozco, Brianna Valdez and Destiny Moedano played all 90 minutes to lead the defensive effort.

Moedano and Ortiz had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State Monterey Bay had a 10-7 advantage in shots, while the Golden Eagles had a 6-3 advantage in corner kick.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday. The Golden Eagles can wrap up second place and a first-round tourney bye with a win.
