LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a rough start to its 2024-25 California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, coming off a thrilling win over No. 10 Azusa Pacific on Friday, were unable to duplicate that effort against a talented Toros team that jumped out to a 22-12 lead after one quarter and never looked back. No. 23 Cal State LA (4-1, 0-1 CCAA) shot just 28.6 percent and committed 27 turnovers against a suffocating Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles were able to force 24 turnovers by the Toros (6-0), but Cal State Dominguez Hills was able to shoot 42.4 percent overall and had a 47-36 rebounding edge.
Sofia Fidelus had a team-high 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Gabriella Rones hit three 3-pointers and had nine points.
Nala Williams had 23 points, six points and four steals, while Asia Jordan had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Olivia Hodges had eight points and 10 rebounds, reaching double figures in rebounds for a third straight game.
Amaya Fuentes had seven points and
Ashari Cassell had six points and five rebounds.
Cal State LA was just 16-of-56 for the game (28.6 percent) and 7-of-28 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills was a much more efficient 28-of-66 (42.4 percent) and 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 15-of-20. The Toros had a 47-36 rebounding edge.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the first six points of the game before a basket by Hodges and never looked back. The Toros led by as many as 11 points before a three-point play by Fidelus got the Golden Eagles to within five points at 13-8. The Toros pulled away to a 22-12 lead after one quarter.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Rones and Buggs got the lead down to four points, 22-18, and a 3-pointer by Rones kept the margin at 29-25, but the Toros closed the second period with a 15-5 run to take a 44-30 halftime lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills then put the game out of reach with a 20-11 edge in the third quarter.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 5 with a home game against Stanislaus State.
