Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Road Win Over Cougars

AZUSA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up a big road win Thursday night at Azusa Pacific.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a double-digit halftime lead and went on to a 70-49 victory in the Felix Event Center. Cal State LA (2-2) won its second straight game with the victory in a matchup between last year's NCAA West Region first-round competitors.

Corey Cofield II had another big game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and six steals. Shane Bell had a season-high 15 points and five steals while playing all 40 minutes for the Golden Eagles.

Jordan Hansen had 14 points for Azusa Pacific (2-3), while Maui Sze had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Kyjuan Cannady had 12 points and three rebounds, while Dominic Escobar had eight points. Chasen Stewart and Connor Scales had six points each and Jaden Lazo had six steals to go along with two points.

Cal State LA shot 52.7 percent for the game (29-of-55) and was 4-of-17 from 3-point range. Azusa Pacific shot 36.2 percent for the game (17-of-47) and was 7-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-11 from the free-throw line, while Azusa Pacific was 8-of-14. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 36-24, but committed only 12 turnovers to 25 for the Cougars.

The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game and never trailed. Back-to-back  baskets by Stewart gave the Golden Eagles a 35-23 halftime lead.

The Cougars sliced the margin to just three points at 46-43 with 12 minutes to go, but Cal State LA outscored them, 24-4, down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Vanguard at 4 p.m.
