Golden Eagles Unable To Tame The Lions

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team endured a rough game at home Saturday against an inspired Vanguard team.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early to an energized Vanguard team and never could recover in a 90-74 loss to the Lions in a non-conference contest University Gym. Cal State LA (2-3) saw a two-game winning streak against PacWest Conference opponents come to an end, while Vanguard (3-0), a newcomer to the conference in its second year of transition to NCAA Division II, remained unbeaten with the victory.

Shane Bell had 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Corey Cofield II had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dominic Escobar had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Anthony Tello had a huge game for the Lions, pouring in a game-high 28 points, while Jackson Larson had 16 points and nine rebounds.

Kyjuan Cannady and Connor Scales had 10 points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA never could get untracked offensively and shot 42.9 percent for the game (27-of-63) and was just 7of-23 from 3-point range. Vanguard shot 52.9 percent (36-of-68) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. Both teams were 13-of-18 from the free-throw line.

Vanguard had a 38-32 rebounding edge and Cal State LA committed 20 turnovers to 19 for the Lions.

Cal State LA allowed the first basket of the game and never was able to get even. The Golden Eagles trailed by just one at 6-5 before Vanguard unleashed a 22-4 run to take a 28-9 lead midway through the first half. Cal State LA closed to within seven points at 30-23 after a 3-pointer by Scales and an offensive rebound basket by Cofield II, but Vanguard scored the next 13 points and ultimately settled for a 47-28 halftime lead.

Vanguard built its lead to 24 points early in the second half, but Cal State LA went on an 11-0 run fueled by a basket by Bell, a 3-pointer by Cannady, a tip-in by Cannady, a 3-pointer by Lazo and a free throw by Cofield II to make it 56-43 with 15 minutes still to go.

The Golden Eagles closed to within seven points after layups by Cofield II and Bell to make it 65-58 with nine minutes left, but that's as close as they would get. Vanguard scored the next six points and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 with its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills in University Gym.
