SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over San Francisco State on Friday.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead by halftime and made the goals stand up in a 2-0 win over the Gators at Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (8-3-4, 5-3-1 CCAA) took over sole possession of third place in the CCAA, four points out behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona and two points behind second-place Stanislaus State with two conference matches remaining.
It was a much-needed win for the Golden Eagles, who are just two points clear of three teams tied for fourth - Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino - and three points ahead of seventh-place Cal Poly Humboldt in a tightly-packed conference race. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 21st minute on a goal by
Jassmin Ortiz, who scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her Cal State LA career.
Destiny Moedano made it 2-0 with her second goal of the season with less than a minute left in the first half.
Jacqueline Marin picked up the assist, the first of her Cal State LA career.
The Golden Eagle defense took it from there, holding San Francisco State (3-12-1, 0-8-1) without a shot in the second half for their third straight shutout and their eighth of the season. Goalkeeper
Taesja Paopao made two saves for the 20th shutout of her career.
Cal State LA had a 13-3 advantage in shots - 8-3 in the first half and 5-0 in the second half. Cal State LA also had all five of the corner kicks in the game, two in the opening half and three in the second half.
Cal State LA will return to action with a big conference match at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
