LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team did not take advantage of a return to University Gym.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never did get untracked and visiting Cal State East Bay recorded a 25-17, 19-25, 25-12, 25-23 win over the defending national champions on Friday. No. 22 Cal State LA (13-7, 8-5 CCAA) slips into a tie for third place in the conference with Stanislaus State.
Samarah DaCoud had 14 kills and three digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Haley Roundtree had 11 kills and a .526 hitting percentage.
Mia Jordan had 15 kills to lead Cal State East Bay (11-10, 6-7 CCAA), while Lexi Pagani had 13 kills and 10 digs.
Emily Elliott had seven kills, five service aces and a team-high eight digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Ashlyn Beaver had 29 set assists.
Cal State East Bay had a 52-48 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .387-.207. The Pioneers also enjoyed a 9-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had nine aces and 10 service errors, while Cal State East Bay had five aces and eight errors.
The Pioneers set the tone for the match with a strong performance in the opening set. They jumped out to an 18-11 lead and never let up for an eight-point opening-set win.
The Golden Eagles appeared to climb into the match with a strong response in the second set. An ace by
Arielle Chandler gave the Golden Eagles a quick 6-2 lead and a strong serving run by Elliott that included an ace gave the Golden Eagles a 14-7 lead. An ace by
Juliana Speiski stretched the lead to 18-10 before the Pioneers scored six straight points behind the serving of Rebeca Freitas to pull to within 20-18. An ace by
Jameson Sanders restored the lead to 22-18 and Elliott ultimately served out the set with a kill from
Mackenzie Wolff and an ace to even the match.
Cal State East Bay, though, took control from there, opening up a quick 10-5 lead and then pulling away for a 25-12 set win before opening up a 16-9 lead in the fourth set. Elliott got the Golden Eagles close with a pair of aces and three kills by Roundtree during a 6-0 run, but the Pioneers never trailed down the stretch and got a final kill from Jordan to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m.
