Elliott Stands Alone Atop CCAA Career Kills List

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's Emily Elliott added another career milestone to her ever-growing list of accomplishments on Saturday during a California Collegiate Athletic Association match with Cal State Monterey Bay.

Elliott became the CCAA's all-time career kills record-holder during the fourth set of a hard-fought 19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 win over the Otters in University Gym. She now has 1,848 kills during her remarkable Cal State LA career, surpassing Cal State San Bernardino's Kim Ford, who had 1,843 kills from 2000-03.

Earlier this season, she became Cal State LA's career kills leader and she will always be remembered for her sensational performances during the 2023 NCAA playoffs that culminated in the Golden Eagles' first-ever national championship with Elliott being named the NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player.

Elliott made sure she got the conference kills record during a Cal State LA victory and the Golden Eagles needed all of her match-high 24 kills to subdue an upset-minded Cal State Monterey Bay team that was coming off a four-set win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and looking for a Southern California road sweep.

The Otters, in fact, took the opening set and staged an impressive fourth-set rally that sliced a 20-10 lead down to 23-21 before a kill by Elliott and an attack error finally ended the match.

No. 22 Cal State LA (14-7, 9-5 CCAA) needed the victory to move back into sole possession of third place in the CCAA, one game ahead of fourth-place Stanislaus State and Cal State San Bernardino. Cal State Monterey Bay (6-15, 5-9 CCAA) falls two games behind sixth-place Cal State East Bay.

Elliott got off to a good start with six kills in the opening set and she added seven in the second frame as Cal State LA was able to even the match. She had four in the third set to pull close to the record and she broke the mark with a thunderous spike down the line on a set from Ashlyn Beaver.

Elliott also had one ace and one block assist for a match-high 25.5 points. She also had 11 digs.

Tehya Chadwick had a strong match for the Golden Eagles, contributing eight kills in 13 swings for a .462 hitting percentage, while Haley Roundtree had eight kills and one block.

Jackie Wahl led the Otters with 20 kills and a pair of blocks, while Kennedy Adams had eight kills and seven digs.

Ashtyn Beaver had 19 set assists and one kill, while Neely Craig had 12 set assists and three aces.

Cal State LA had a 53-48 edge in kills and outhit the Otters, .279-.205. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-3 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had 10 service aces, including three each from Jameson Sanders and Craig, and 10 errors, while the Otters had three aces and eight errors.

Cal State LA dropped the opening set for the second match in a row, but evened the contest with a 25-17 win in the second. A pair of service aces by Sanders, a pair of kills by Elliott and a kill by Rachel Lowe fueled a 7-0 run that put the Golden Eagles ahead, 24-14. A kill by Elliott ultimately ended the set.

Cal State LA opened up a 16-9 lead in the third set sparked by a block by Lowe and Elliott and kills by Zuhal Cetin and Elliott and back-to-back kills by Elliott and an ace by Juliana Speiski expanded the lead to 19-10. Kills from Chadwick accounted for the Golden Eagles' final three points of the set as they took a 2-1 lead.

Elliott got kills for three of Cal State LA's first four points in the fourth set to break the record. An ace by Cetin completed an 8-0 run to make it 11-5. An ace from Sanders after another strong serving run gave the Golden Eagles an 18-8 lead and a kill by Elliott made it 20-10.

The Otters then made for a few anxious moments in University Gym as they scored seven straight points to pull to within 20-17. They eventually got to within 23-21 before a kill by Elliott and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the win.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at conference-leading Cal Poly Pomona.
