No. 3 Golden Eagles Clinch CCAA Tournament Spot

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team overcame a tough challenge from San Francisco State early on Friday and clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament later in the evening.

The Golden Eagles got goals from Oscar Warne and Matteo Costa to edge the Gators, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (10-0-5, 5-0-4 CCAA) recorded its second straight one-goal victory and stretched its unbeaten streak to 29 games dating back to last season.

Then, the late results came in and Cal State LA, the two-time defending CCAA Tournament champions, clinched a spot in the tourney for a 13th straight season after a tie between Chico State and Cal State East Bay. The Golden Eagles also took over sole possession of the conference lead after a 0-0 tie between Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay. They are now two points ahead of the Toros and Cal Poly Pomona with two matches remaining.

The Golden Eagles also reached 10 wins for the 12th straight season.

It was a good day, indeed.

Warne scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 20th minute to get the Golden Eagles off to a strong start. Marlon Radel sent a long ball into the box, where Carson Nguyen directed to Warne from in close for the goal. It was Warne's team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Nguyen picked up his first assist of the season and Radel also picked up his first assist of the season.

That goal held up until the 59th minute when San Francisco State (1-9-5, 1-5-3) got the equalizer from Diego Barcelos, who scored his first goal of the season.

Costa, though, put the Golden Eagles back ahead in the 75th minute with his third of the season and his second in two games. He got an assist from Ignacio Moreno, who picked up his second assist of the season and second in the past four games.

Ricardo Cabrera made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.

The shots were even at 9-9 with Cal State LA having a 7-5 edge in the first half and San Francisco State owning a 4-2 edge in the second half. Cal State LA had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks with a 1-0 edge in the second half.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a big match at Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m.
