Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 3 Golden Eagles Maintain Share Of CCAA Lead

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team's hopes of successfully defending its California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season title will now come down to one game on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles were stunned by a late game-tying penalty-kick goal by Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday and settled for a 1-1 draw at Cardinale Stadium. No. 3 Cal State LA (10-0-6, 5-0-5 CCAA) now has 20 points in conference play and is tied at the top with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona for the conference lead. All three teams are 5-0-5 with one game remaining.

Cal State Monterey Bay (7-3-6, 4-2-4 CCAA) also clinched a spot in the six-team conference tournament and sits in fifth place with 16 points.

Cal State LA stretched its unbeaten streak to 30 games, dating back to last season. Cal State Monterey Bay was the last team to beat the Golden Eagles, defeating Cal State LA, 2-0, last October in University Stadium.

The game Sunday was much different with Cal State LA taking a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute on a goal by Oscar Warne and seemingly headed to victory. The Otters, though, were awarded a penalty kick with just 3:04 remaining in the game and Hugo Vargas-Rios converted for the tie.

Cal State LA had one last opportunity in the final 90 seconds, but a shot by Marlon Radel went wide and the remaining time ran out without further incident.

Cal State Monterey Bay had a 12-9 edge in shots, including a 9-4 advantage in the second half. Cal State LA had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks with all four coming in the first half.

Ricardo Cabrera made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff made two saves for the Otters.

Warne scored his second goal of the weekend, his fourth in the past five games, and his sixth of the season to give the Golden Eagles the lead early in the second half. He now has nine in his Cal State LA career. Tommaso Belli and Roei Mordechay had the assists. Belli now has a team-high five assists, while Mordechay is second with four.

Cabrera kept the lead for the Golden Eagles with three saves following Warne's goal, but the Otters broke through late with the penalty kick to tie it.

Cal State LA will be at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a share of the conference title on the line in a battle between the holders of the past four conference regular-season titles. The Golden Eagles have won three of the last four in 2019, 2021 and 2023, while the Toros broke through in 2022. Cal State LA has won three consecutive CCAA Tournament titles as well as the 2021 NCAA Championship.
