TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team completed an outstanding opening week of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with an impressive win over Stanislaus State on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles scored the first three goals of the game and went on to beat the Warriors, 3-1, in Warrior Stadium. Cal State LA (5-0-3, 2-0 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten string to eight games in a row to start the season and picked up two big wins on the road against two of the perennial powers in the conference.
Cal State LA and Sonoma State were the only two teams to go 2-0 on the first weekend of conference play.
Cal State LA got a first-half goal from
Mia Del Muro and second-half goals from
Shelby Melin and
Delia Bocanegra to record the win.
Taesja Paopao made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, all in the first half.
Cal State LA had a 17-8 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Del Muro opened the scoring with a big goal in the 23rd minute with assists from Bocanegra and
Andrea Hernandez. The goal was the second of the season for Del Muro.Â
That was the only goal in the first half.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open with a pair of goals in a seven-minute span of the second half. Melin gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 50th minute, her first of the season and the eighth of her spectacular Cal State LA career.
Bocanegra made it 3-0 with her third goal of the season in the 57th minute with an assist from
Jassmin Ortiz. Bocanegra leads the Golden Eagles in scoring so far this season with three goals and two assists for eight points. Ortiz picked up her first assist of the season and recorded the 10th point of her Cal State LA career.
Stanislaus State (3-4-2, 0-2 CCAA) spoiled the Golden Eagles' shutout bid with a goal by Jocelin Roa just 16 seconds later with an assist from Kaley Miller.

Destiny Moedano and
Liliana Gonzalez all had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Brianna Valdez, Moedano, and
Jaclyn Orozco played all 90 minutes to lead the defensive effort.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Sonoma State on Friday at 7 p.m. at University Stadium.
