Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 25 Golden Eagles Take Over First Place In CCAA

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team emerged victorious in an early-season showdown between California Collegiate Athletic Association leaders.

The No. 25 Golden Eagles got a go-ahead goal late in the first half and went on to a 2-0 win over Sonoma State Friday night in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-0-3, 3-0 CCAA) remains unbeaten on the season and sits alone atop the CCAA with nine points.

Sonoma State (4-3-3, 2-1 CCAA) had a seven-match unbeaten streak snapped.

Cal State LA weathered an early Sonoma State storm thanks to brilliant play once again from Taesja Paopao. The senior All-American made four of her six saves early in the game and allowed the Golden Eagles to find their footing in an even game.

The Golden Eagles got a goal with just 27 seconds left in the first half from Delia Bocanegra. She fired a left-footed shot off an assist from Destiny Moedano to give the Golden Eagles the lead. Bocanegra leads the Golden Eagles with four goals. She had Cal State LA's first shot of the game in the 22nd minute, a blast that struck the near goalpost and bounded away.

Shelby Melin made it 2-0 in the 55th minute on a penalty kick, her second goal of the season and second in as many games.

Cal State LA's defense - and Paopao - took it from there. The Golden Eagles recorded their fifth shutout of the season.

Sonoma State ended up with a 12-6 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in the first half. The Seawolves also had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-0 edge in the second half.

Bocanegra had two of the Golden Eagles' six shots. Brianna Valdez, Moedano and Jaclyn Orozco led the defensive effort with 90 minutes of strong play.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday against Cal Poly Humboldt at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their 10 seniors in a pregame ceremony at 1 p.m.
