LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker on Sunday and saw its season-opening nine-match unbeaten streak come to a stunning end.
The Golden Eagles were locked in a scoreless battle with Cal Poly Humboldt with some spectacular goalkeeping late in the California Collegiate Athletic Association contest keeping the match scoreless. The 'Jacks (5-5-1, 2-2 CCAA), though got a goal with just 1:36 remaining to hand No. 25 Cal State LA (6-1-3 CCAA) its first loss of the season and its first conference loss since a 2-1 defeat at Stanislaus State on Oct. 21, 2022.
The Golden Eagles came back and won the CCAA Tournament that season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Cal State LA had a 19-4 advantage in shots in the game - 7-1 in the first half and 12-3 in the second - but couldn't get one past Cal Poly Humboldt goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel, who made six saves, including four in the second half as the Golden Eagles frantically pressured to get a go-ahead goal.
In fact, the game-deciding sequence featured miraculous saves from Thomson-Terrell and Cal State LA goalkeeper
Taesja Paopao in the final two minutes. After
Brianna Valdez and
Destiny Moedano had hard shots saved by Thomson-Terrell, Cal Poly Humboldt's Frida Arellano appeared to have a sure goal, only to see Paopao make a tremendous diving stop to push the shot aside.
Cal Poly Humboldt, though, then scored off the ensuing corner kick with Arrelano heading one in from inside the box to the far post.
Cal State LA got one last chance with a corner kick in the waning seconds, but
Alejandra Andalon's shot went over the crossbar and time ran out.
Cal State LA, in addition to its large shot advantage, also had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 6-1 edge in the second half.
Delia Bocanegra was Cal State LA's most dangerous threat with a match-high four shots, while
Liliana Gonzalez and
Shelby Melin had three shots each.
Cal State LA honored its 10 seniors on Sunday with
Natalia Puccio,
Presli Dillon,
Brianna Valdez,
Andrea Hernandez,
Liliana Gonzalez,
Jassmin Ortiz,
Shelby Melin,
Taesja Paopao,
Jaclyn Orozco and
Destiny Moedano all celebrated for their contributions to the program.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona in University Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
