Golden Eagles Get Late Goal To Edge Wildcats

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team got a late goal from Liliana Gonzalez to pick up a big win in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Friday night at Chico State.

Gonzalez scored her second goal of the season in the 88th minute to lift the Golden Eagles past the Wildcats, 1-0, in Chico State's University Soccer Stadium. Cal State LA (4-0-3, 1-0 CCAA) extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to seven in a row with its fourth shutout of the season.

The game was scoreless until just 2:36 remained when Gonzalez blasted a shot from inside the box for the game-winner. The winning shot came after a series of Cal State LA throw-ins and came less than a minute after she was substituted back into the game by head coach Erik Garcia.

Gonzalez also netted the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Chico State last November in a first-round CCAA Tournament win.

She now has 16 goals in her Cal State LA career and Friday's tally was her 13th game-winner.

The Golden Eagles got a sensational game from senior All-American goalkeeper Taesja Paopao, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season with seven saves. The seven saves are just one shy of her season high of eight that came in a 0-0 tie with Hawaii-Hilo.

Chico State had a 10-8 edge in shots and the Golden Eagles had only two shots in the second half and just one on frame. Each team had three corner kicks.

Brianna Valdez, Destiny Moedano, Jaclyn Orozco and Giselle Uribe spearheaded a magnificent defensive effort, with each playing all 90 minutes. Shelby Melin had a team-high three shots.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a match at Stanislaus State at 2 p.m.
