LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in another strong performance Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association battle with perennial power Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and never let up in a 79-55 win over the Broncos in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-2, 5-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and remained in a second-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino, one game back of Cal State East Bay.
Dominic Escobar, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, had another outstanding game with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes. He was 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Eche Okeke had 14 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting and
Shane Bell had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Brandon Porter had 12 points for Cal Poly Pomona (2-8, 1-5 CCAA), while Caleb Nelson had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Kris Krause had nine points, coming on three 3-pointers, to go along with three rebounds, while
A'Jahni Levias had five points and a team-high five assists.
Corey Cofield had four points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA had a strong game offensively and shot 47.5 percent for the game (29-of-61) and was 12-of-33 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot just 35.2 percent (19-of-54) and was 4-of-15 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 13-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 38-33 rebounding edge, but Cal State LA committed only 10 turnovers while forcing 20 by the Broncos.
After Cal State LA trailed early, 3-0, a rebound basket by Cofield, a 3-pointer by Escobar, a layup by Okeke, a 3-pointer by Escobar and a free throw by Okeke quickly put the Golden Eagles ahead, 11-3, and Cal State LA led the rest of the way.
A 3-pointer by Bell and a dunk on a fastbreak by
Isaiah Fields got the lead up to 13 points at 26-13, a 3-pointer by
Jaden Lazo made it 29-14 and a 3-pointer by Krause stretched the lead to 32-16. The Golden Eagles maintained double-digit leads and led 37-26 at halftime.
The Broncos scored the first four points of the second half to get to within 37-30, but a 3-pointer by
Deuce Walker stopped the run. Cal Poly Pomona got within seven points for a final time at 44-37, but a three-point play by Escobar, a steal and layup by Escobar and a basket by Levias boosted the lead back to 51-37.
The Golden Eagles led by at least nine points the rest of the way and ended the game on an 18-4 run to expand the winning margin.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a big home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
