Golden Eagles Come Up Big In Win Over Coyotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued its winning ways on Saturday with an impressive victory over the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions.

The Golden Eagles broke a 37-37 halftime tie with a spectacular second-half performance and surged to a 95-85 victory over No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-2, 6-1 CCAA) won its sixth straight game and equaled the best start in program history, matching the 11-2 start by the 1950-51 squad.

With the victory, the Golden Eagles moved into a tie for first place in the CCAA after Cal State East Bay lost to Chico State later Saturday night.

Cal State LA won on Saturday with an explosive offensive showing against a Cal State San Bernardino team that entered the game as the No. 1 defensive team in the conference. The 95 points scored by Cal State LA matched a season-high and were the most allowed this season by the Coyotes, who entered the game ranked No. 6 in the nation with 61.9 points allowed per game.

The Golden Eagles lead the conference in offense and are averaging 80.4 points a game. Cal State LA also entered the game ranked No. 3 in the nation in turnover margin at plus-9.8 per game.

Balanced scoring - the Golden Eagles had six players reach double figures - and the turnover margin - Cal State LA had just seven turnovers while forcing 19 that led to a 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers - were the major factors in the game.

Corey Cofield had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Dominic Escobar had 17 points, two rebounds, two blocks and three steals. He continued his outstanding shooting and was 7-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Eche Okeke had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sedrick Altman had a game-high 22 points for the Coyotes, while Robby Robinson had 16 points and 13 rebounds. LeAndrew Knight had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Shane Bell had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, while Isaiah Fields had 11 points and A'Jahni Levias had 10 points.

Cal State LA shot 51.5 percent for the game (34-of-66), including 61.3 percent in the second half (19-of-31). The Golden Eagles were 10-of-24 from 3-point range, including 6-of-10 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were also 17-of-23 from the free-throw line, including 14-of-17 in the second half.

Cal State San Bernardino shot 42.3 percent for the game (30-of-71) and was 8-of-18 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 17-of-24 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino had a hefty 53-28 rebounding edge, but the Golden Eagles forced 19 turnovers while committing only seven.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but entered the break in a 37-37 tie. The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a layup by Okeke and a pair of free throws by Cofield to take a 41-37 advantage and led the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run on 3-pointers by Escobar and Bell and a dunk by Cofield to take a 59-48 lead and they never led by less than six points the rest of the way. 

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 15 points in the second half and finished strong for the win.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
