No. 23 Golden Eagles Rebound Nicely In San Marcos

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team bounced back nicely from its disappointing loss on Friday at Cal Poly Pomona with a much-needed win at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 23 Golden Eagles, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champions, got back on the winning track with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 win over the Cougars at The Sports Center. Cal State LA (5-7, 3-1 CCAA) had a 40-22 advantage in kills in the three-set win.

Emily Elliott led the way with 15 kills and an outstanding hitting percentage of .419, while Ashley Dittmann had 12 kills, two aces and six digs. Iane Henke had eight kills, a team-high three aces and two solo blocks.

Isabelle Bakken had 10 kills and one ace for Cal State San Marcos (4-8, 2-2 CCAA). 

Jaden Grova had 19 set assists and eight digs, while Eliza Cannon had 12 assists and one kill. Jameson Sanders had a team-high 13 digs and also contributed six set assists.

The Golden Eagles trailed early in the opening set, 5-3, but went on a 5-0 run that included a service ace from Sanders and a solo block by Grubbs. The Cougars tied it at 8-8, but kills by Elliott and Dittmann and two attack errors gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Cal State San Marcos closed to within 15-13, but the Golden Eagles scored the next three points and were never threatened again. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 23-16 after a kill by Dittmann and closed out the set with kills from Dittmann and Henke.

Cal State LA jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set and led the rest of the way. Cal State San Marcos was able to cut the deficit to 20-18, but a kill by Dittmann, an attack error and a kill by Grubbs boosted the lead to 23-18. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-19 after a kill by Elliott and a block by Cannon ended the set.

The Golden Eagles trailed 11-7 in the final set, but surged ahead with a 6-0 run that started with a kill by Elliott. An attack error, kills by Elliott and Dittmann and a pair of aces by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 13-11 lead. Cal State San Marcos got as close as 16-15 before a kill by Elliott and a block by Grubbs and Cannon made it 18-15. After the Cougars pulled to within 18-16, a kill by Henke and an attack error made it 20-16. Cal State LA took a 23-17 lead after two kills by Elliott and an attack error and the Golden Eagles ultimately ended the match after two Cal State San Marcos errors.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino at 5 p.m.
