LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball picked a good time for its biggest win of the 2023 season.
The Golden Eagles, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champions, upended perennial conference power Cal State San Bernardino, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24 in front of an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd Friday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-7, 4-1 CCAA) remains in a second-place tie with San Francisco State after its fourth win in conference play. The No. 25 Golden Eagles earned an impressive victory over the No. 12 Yotes (10-3, 3-2 CCAA) by putting the match away with a nice comeback in the fourth set.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 6-0 and 10-3 early in the fourth set and still trailed by four points, 20-16, before rallying to get to match point at 24-23. The Yotes were able to save one match point, but the Golden Eagles scored the final two points for the victory.
Emily Elliott had 18 kills, three blocks and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Iane Henke had 16 kills, three aces and seven digs.
Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills and 13 digs.
Trinity Sheridan had 18 kills for the Yotes, while Jenna Patton had seven kills and four blocks. Shira Lahav had a match-high 27 digs.
Eliza Cannon had three kills, four blocks and 31 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Rachel Lowe had a team-high six blocks to go along with three kills.
Cal State LA opened up a 14-6 lead in the opening set behind a strong serving run by
Jaden Grova, only to see the Yotes battled back with six straight points to make it 14-12. The Yotes got as close as 21-20 before a ball handling error and a kill by Henke opened up a 23-20 lead. After a kill by Sheridan made it 23-21, a kill by Elliott and an ace by Henke ended the set.
Cal State LA fell into an early 6-2 hole in the second set, but fought back to take a 15-13 lead after a pair of kills by Elliott and a kill by Dittmann. The Golden Eagles led as late as 21-20 after a block by Lowe and Elliott and the set was tied at 22-22 after a kill by Cannon, but the Yotes rattled off the final three points to even the match.
Cal State LA regained its lead in the third set, jumping out to an early 7-2 edge after an ace by
Jameson Sanders. The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven points at 10-3, but the Yotes steadily chipped away and pulled to within 18-17. The Golden Eagles then got kills by Henke and Dittmann, a ball-handling error, a block by Lowe and Dittmann and a service ace by Henke to lead, 23-17. Kills by Dittmann and Henke ultimately ended the set.
The Golden Eagles put the match away in the fourth set, but not without some anxious moments. Cal State San Bernardino led by as many as seven points in the frame and still held a 20-16 lead before the Golden Eagles roared back. Kills by Elliott and Dittmann and a pair of attack errors tied it at 20-20. Cal State San Bernardino then took a 23-21 lead, but kills by Henke, Cannon and Henke again got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-23. A kill by Sheridan tied the set, but a service error and a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at 5 p.m. with a home match against San Francisco State.
