LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA women's volleyball team put the finishing touches on a tremendous weekend with a three-set sweep over San Francisco State Saturday in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and survived a major challenge from the Gators in the third set before closing out an impressive 25-14, 25-18, 27-25 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. No. 25 Cal State LA (7-7, 5-1 CCAA) was coming off a four-set win over No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night and showed no signs of a letup against a talented San Francisco State (8-6, 4-2 CCAA) team that was tied for second in the conference with the Golden Eagles entering Saturday's match.
Emily Elliott was sensational again on Saturday, recording a match-high 18 kills to go along with 13 digs and three service aces. She hit at a .371 percentage for the match.
Iane Henke had 12 kills and 13 digs and hit at a .357 clip.
Izzy Issak, Tamiya Wilson and Trinity Yates had seven kills each for the Gators.
Ashley Dittmann had eight kills and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Haley Roundtree had three kills in three swings and had a match-high seven blocks.
Jaden Grova and
Eliza Cannon combined for 36 set assists and
Jameson Sanders contributed 12 digs.
Cal State LA had a 44-28 edge in kills and outhit the Gators, .360-.084. The Golden Eagles also had a big night blocking, holding an 11-2 edge in that department.
The Golden Eagles started quickly on Saturday and never let up. Cal State LA opened up a 14-3 lead in the opening set after two kills by Dittmann, an attack error and two aces by Elliott that sparked a 6-0 run. Cal State LA built a 21-9 lead afer blocks by Roundtree and Henke and Roundtree and Elliott and put the set away after a kill by Dittmann and a block by Cannon and Grubbs.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the second set after a kill by Roundtree and still led, 20-13, before San Francisco State pulled to within 20-17. A service error and attack error stopped the run and kills by Elliott and Henke made it 24-17. A kill by Elliott ended the set.
The third set was the most exciting and San Francisco State fought off three match points before Cal State LA was able to close out the match. The Golden Eagles seemingly had things in hand with a 23-19 lead after a kill by Elliott, but the Gators quickly got to within 23-22 before a kill by Elliott brought the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-22. After the Gators tied it at 24-24, the Golden Eagles got another match point after a kill by Grubbs, but a service error tied it up at 25-25. A kill by Dittmann gave the Golden Eagles a 26-25 lead and Grubbs prevailed in a joust at the net to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road match at Cal Poly Humboldt.
