LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team opened its 2023 season with an entertaining home victory over Regis at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles got a spectacular first-half goal by returning All-American
Bryan Ortega and earned a 1-0 victory in a game that featured some exciting end-to-end action and some spectacular goalkeeping that kept the game from turning into a 4-3 shootout.
Cal State LA's
Julian Aadlandsvik, in his first career start, made four saves, including three tremendous stops that thwarted prime scoring chances. Regis goalkeeper Greg Squire was tremendous as well with six saves, including a pair of sensational bak-to-back stops in the second half that kept his team in it.
The only goal of the game came in the 36th minute from Ortega, who led the Golden Eagles in goals and scoring last season with six goals and 17 points. He weaved his way through traffic toward the middle of the field outside of the box and rifled a shot just inside the far post and under the crossbar for a highlight-reel strike.
Aadlandsvik wasn't tested often, but Regis had some prime scoring chances tipped away by Cal State LA's new starting goalie. He was able to elevate and knock away a shot from Michael Jimenez in the 15th minute and deflected a strong bid from Ben Shepherd in the 22nd minute to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, he stopped a Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit.
Squire's best moments came in stunning fashion in the final 10 minutes of the game when he denied
Carl Solli of a goal and when Ortega got to the rebound and fired another hard shot, Squire was there to stop that attempt, too.
Cal State LA had a 17-4 edge in shots with Ortega leading the way with five and Solli firing off three.
Tommaso Belli and
Sergio Vega had two each.
Cal State LA also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA will return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 6, with a home game against Westmont at 7 p.m.
