LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team turned in its second straight shutout Wednesday night in another close and exciting game at University Stadium.
The No. 4 Golden Eagles (2-0) got a first-half goal from
Oscar Warne and made it stand up in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Westmont. Cal State LA got a pair of saves from goalkeeper
Julian Aadlandsvik, including a spectacular stop in the 85th minute that preserved the victory.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of a hard shot by
Sergio Vega that was stopped by Westmont goalkeeper Brady Highfill. Warne got to the rebound first and fired it into the net for his first goal of the season and the second of his Cal State LA career. His first career goal came last season in the second half of a 6-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona.
Vega, a newcomer from Golden West College, picked up the first point of his Cal State La career.
Aadlandsvik made the biggest of his two saves in the late stages of the game when he deflected a hard shot by Westmont's Connor Lynch. The ball trickled to the side and off the post to Aadlandsvik's right and stayed out.
Lynch was a constant thorn in the Golden Eagles' sides with a match-high four shots, including a second-half bid that sailed just wide about five minutes before his bid in the 85th minute.
Cal State LA was out-shot, 14-11, and Westmont, who is a newcomer to the PacWest Conference this season, also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Simon Johansen and Vega each had two shots for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday in its first road action of the season at Biola at 7 p.m.
