HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to get the finale it wanted in the conclusion of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles took the lead with a three-run second inning rally, but they were blanked the rest of the way in a 5-3 loss to the Pioneers at Pioneer Baseball Field. Cal State LA (16-24, 11-20 CCAA) took the opener of the series on Friday, but Cal State East Bay (22-19, 16-15 CCAA) won the final three games to take the series.
Cal State LA got a strong start from pitcher
Eric Navarrete, who tossed a season-best six innings and gave up nine hits and three earned runs. He walked two and struck out two. Navarrete has given up three or less earned runs three consecutive starts.
Mikell Chavez finished up and allowed only two hits and one run over the final two innings.
Johnny Pacheco and
Matthew Piotrowski had two hits each for the Golden Eagles. Pacheco,
Nick Atkins and
Kadyn Victorian-Young drove in runs for Cal Staet LA.
Tristin Tatum allowed three runs over six innings to pick up the win for the Pioneers. Derek Murphy and James Colyer allowed only one hit and no runs over the final three innings.
After Cal State East Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Golden Eagles struck back for three runs in the second.
Andrew Tovar led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by
Ethan Gonzalez.
Wilem Drozdowski drew a walk to load the bases. Atkins singled to drive in the first run and tie the game and Victorian-Young grounded out to drive in another run and give the Golden Eagles the lead. Pacheco singled in Drozdowski to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Cal State East Bay, though, tied it with a pair of runs in the third and took the lead in the sixth inning on Luke Novitske's run-scoring single. The Pioneers added another run in the eighth inning on a pinch-hit RBI single from Jacob Klinovsky.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a final makeup game against Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m. before beginning its final home series of the year next Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
