HAYWARD -- After taking the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal State East Bay on Friday, Cal State LA's baseball team ran into some major difficulty on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles gave up the final nine runs in a 13-4 loss to the Pioneers in the opener and were blanked, 2-0, in the seven-inning nightcap at Pioneer Field. Cal State LA (16-23, 11-19 CCAA) was tied at 4-4 through four innings of the opener, but didn't score over the next 12 innings.
Kadyn Victorian-Young hit a solo home run for the Golden Eagles in the opener and
Andrew Tovar had two hits and two runs scored. After the Golden Eagles tied it at 4-4 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Anthony Angel Jr. and a run-scoring single by
Kai Penuelas, the Pioneers scored four in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Pioneers added three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to increase their advantage.
Julian Tellez got the start for the Golden Eagles and went 4 2/3 innings before
Colby Davis came on to get the next nine outs.
Jacob Rangel got the final out in the eighth inning.
Anthony Perez came on in relief and allowed two hits and no runs over the final 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for Cal State East Bay.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Golden Eagles got single runs in the second and third innings to pull close.
Ethan Gonzalez doubled to left and Tovar came around to score after an error in the outfield to make it 3-1 in the second and Victorian-Young slugged his second home run of the season in the third to make it 3-2.
After Cal State East Bay made it 4-2 with a run in the third, the Golden Eagles tied it in the fourth. Angel's sacrifice fly scored Tover to make it 4-3 and a single by Penuelas scored Gonzalez to tie it.
The Pioneers, though, took the lead for good in the fifth with a four-run rally capped off by a two-run home run by Matthew Mandeville. The Pioneers collected 23 hits in the game.
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Cal State LA's
Anthony Diaz and Cal State East Bay's Ethan Brodsky. Diaz allowed only five hits and two runs while walking four and striking out four, but Brodsky didn't allow a run and permitted only four hits without a walk. He struck out to improve to 6-3.
Two of the Golden Eagles' four hits went for extra bases with
Johnny Pacheco doubling to lead off the game and
Wilem Drozdowski tripling to lead off the fifth. Pacheco moved to third on a groundout by
Drew Emmons in the first, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. After Drozdowski hit his triple in the fifth, Brodsky got three straight groundouts to end the inning.
Cal State LA also threatened in the sixth when
Matthew Piotrowski reached second on a fielding error to lead off, but
Michael Rosales lined out and Brodsky got the final two outs to emerge unscathed. The Golden Eagles went down in order in the seventh.
Troy Maki pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
