TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team got outstanding pitching performances on Saturday in a doubleheader split at Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles got a strong seven-inning start from
Julian Tellez and an effective six-inning start from
Trevor Baugh and limited the Warriors to just four runs at Warrior Field. Cal State LA (10-11, 5-7 CCAA)Â Â took the opener, 4-2, and dropped the nightcap in nine innings, 2-1.
Fabian Moran had a two-run triple to stake the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 lead in the first inning of the opener and Anthony Angel Jr. hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give them a 4-1 lead. After Stanislaus State (15-14, 8-11 CCAA) cut the margin to 4-2 and had the tying runs on base in the eighth,
Anthony Diaz came into the game and got the final five outs for his second save of the season.
The Golden Eagles had a 1-0 lead in the nightcap after a first-inning run-scoring groundout by
Matthew Piotrowski, but were blanked the rest of the way. Stanislaus State tied it on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the third inning and won it with an unearned run in the ninth. Cal State LA had just four hits in the nightcap.
In the opener, Tellez allowed only seven hits and one over seven outstanding innings. He walked two and struck out four and picked up his second win of the season.
Colby Davis got one out in the eighth inning and gave up a run and Diaz was masterful, retiring five of the six batters he faced to save the win for Tellez. Diaz got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth and worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth inning by retiring the next three batters, two by strikeout.
Johnny Pacheco was 3-for-5 for the Golden Eagles, while
Wilem Drozdowski went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Moran delivered a clutch two-out, two-run triple in the first inning, while Angel Jr. followed a walk to Drozdowski with his first home run of the season.
Pacheco tripled to lead off the nightcap and scored on a one-out groundout by Piotrowski. He got a foul out for the first out and Piotrowski cut down a runner at home for the second. Baugh hit a batter on an 0-2 pitch to force in a run before getting a groundout to end the inning.
Baugh exited after the sixth inning, allowing just the one run on just three hits. He walked six and struck out six.
