REDLANDS -- Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks in two events Friday to highlight a strong day for the Golden Eagles in the 2023 Redlands Invitational.

Tafirenyika won the 200 meters with a time of 21.19 and also placed second in the 400 with a season's best time of 47.39. Tafirenyika, who earned All-America honors last season in the 400 and 4x400 relay, was running for the first time at 200 meters and had a smashing success in his debut.

Cal State LA picked up three more provisional marks on a very successful day. Quintin Workman won the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.02 that eclipsed the provisional standard of 53.52 and stands as the No. 1 mark in the country. Workman then teamed up with Shannon Turner, Burrell Adams and Tafirenyika for a win in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:13.60 that beat the provisional standard of 3:14.07 and also the No. 1 mark in the nation.

The Golden Eagles got an impressive 1-2 finish in the 800 as Turner picked up the win with a time of 1:51.23 and Jesus Nichol II was a close second in 1:51.87. Turner's time beat the provisional qualifying standard of 1:51.48, while Nichol II was just above it. Both times were season's bests for Turner and Nichol II, while Nichol II was just above his personal best of 1:51.47. Turner's time is No. 1 in the nation, while Nichol II is No. 4.

For the women, Destiny Moedano had the best individual performance by finishing second in the 800 with a time of 2:20.85.

Cal State LA will return to action next weekend in meets at UCLA and Cal State San Marcos.
