Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Drop An OT Heartbreaker To Otters

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put itself in position for a key California Collegiate Athletic Association road win, but instead suffered a gut-wrenching overtime defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but the Otters got a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime and ultimately prevailed, 89-84 in the Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (9-13, 6-10 CCAA) slipped 1 1/2 games out of sixth place, which is shared by Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay (9-11, 7-8 CCAA). Both the Broncos and Otters have seven games remaining as both still need to play contests against Cal State San Bernardino that were postponed earlier in the season.

Cal State LA is among those with six games remaining, four of which will be in University Gym.

Shane Bell had a sensational game, pouring in a career-high 31 points as he returns impressively from injury. Bell's previous high game was 20, most recently accomplished at Cal Poly Humboldt in January. He was 13-of-22 for the game 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Alexander Sokol had 15 points and two rebounds and Payton Moore had 15 points, two rebounds and three assists.

Levi Frankland had a game-high 35 points for the Otters, while Jailen Nelson had 16, including the game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation.

Kyjuan Cannady had a strong game for the Golden Eagles with 12 points.

Cal State LA shot 49.2 percent for the game (32-of-65) and was 11-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were especially efficient in the first half, hitting 55 percent from the floor and making 8-of-14 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles struggled at the free-throw line, making only 9-of-17. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) and was 11-of-25 from 3-point range. The Otters were also 20-of-28 from the free-throw line, which ultimately was the difference in the game.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 49-30 and committed only nine turnovers to 12 for the Otters.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half and got 3-pointers late in the half from Bell, Sokol and Cannady to take a 41-32 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles saw their lead cut to three points early in the second half, 41-38, but regrouped and took their first double-digit lead after a basket by Jaden Lazo made it 50-40 with 16 minutes to go. Cal State LA took its biggest lead at 59-44 after a pair of free throws by Bell with 13:26 to go.

Cal State LA still had a double-digit lead at 69-57 after a free throw by Deuce Walker with 8:26 remaining, but Cal State Monterey Bay began chipping away at the deficit and pulled to within striking distance late. A jumper by Moore gave the Golden Eagles a 75-69 lead with 4:21 to go and, after a 3-pointer by Frankland made it 75-72, Bell countered with a basket to make it 77-72 with 1:30 left. Bell then made a block at the other end, but the Golden Eagles couldn't convert and Frankland made a layup to make it 77-74 with 42 seconds left.

Cal State LA missed on its next possession as well and left the door open for Nelson to deliver his game-tying heroics.

Bell opened the scoring in overtime and his second straight basket gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 81-79 before the Otters scored the next six points to take an 85-81 lead. Bell hit a 3-pointer to pull the Golden Eagles to within 85-84 with 57 seconds remaining, but the Otters made all four of their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a key home game against Stanislaus State.
