Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Win Over No. 19 Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team will be ringing in a happy new year after an impressive win over No. 19 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles opened up a nine-point lead by halftime and then put the game out of reach with a terrific start to the second half in an 81-66 win over the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State LA (9-2, 4-1 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to four and put an end to a nine-game winning streak by Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-2, 4-1 CCAA), which was nationally-ranked by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Golden Eagles also knocked the Toros from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play, leaving Cal State East Bay as the lone undefeated team remaining.

Dominic Escobar had a sensational game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He was 2-of-3 from 3-point range, 6-of-7 from the free throw line and grabbed seven rebounds in 27 outstanding minutes of play. Isaiah Fields had 14 points in 15 electric minutes, going 5-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Shane Bell had 10 points and two assists and Eche Okeke had 10 points and five rebounds.

Andre Ball had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Jakob Alamudun had 12 points and three assists.

Corey Cofield had nine points, four assists and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had an extremely efficient game on offense, shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) for the game and going 14-of-27 in each half. The Golden Eagles were also 12-of-28 from 3-point range and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) and was just 4-of-17 from 3-point range. The Toros were 18-of-25 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles had a 32-27 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 14 for the Toros.

Cal State LA surrendered the first five points of the game and took its first lead on a 3-pointer by A'Jahni Levias that gave the Golden Eagles a 16-15 lead. That was followed by a 3-pointer by Cofield. The Toros briefly reclaimed the lead before a 3-pointer by Kris Krause put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 22-20. After a pair of free throws by Ball tied it, the Golden Eagles took command with a 12-1 run that included a pair of go-ahead free throws by Escobar, five points from Fields, a jumper by Bell and a 3-pointer by Fields that put the Golden Eagles up, 34-23. 

After settling for a 41-32 halftime lead, the Golden Eagles saw the lead cut to 44-38 before embarking on an 11-0 run that essentially put the game out of reach. Escobar started the run with a jumper, Bell hit a 3-pointer, Okeke hit three straight baskets for a 55-38 lead with 14 minutes to go. Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way and built leads as large as 24 points.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m.
