No. 4 Golden Eagles Wrap Up CCAA Championship!!

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team put the finishing touches on the 2023 California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with another tremendous performance Sunday at Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Golden Eagles scored a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up in a 2-0 win over the 'Jacks at College Creek Field. No. 4 Cal State LA (14-1-1, 9-1 CCAA) won its eighth straight game and recorded its 12th shutout. The Golden Eagles have 27 points with one conference game remaining and hold a four-point lead over second-place Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State LA won its ninth CCAA regular-season championship and its third in the past four seasons.

Cal State LA has now won a championship in five straight seasons. The run started with a CCAA Tournament title in 2018, continued with a CCAA regular-season and Super Region 4 titles in 2019, hit a high-water mark in 2021 when the Golden Eagles won CCAA regular-season, CCAA tournament, NCAA Super Region 4 and NCAA Division II championships, continued last season with the CCAA Tournament title and now includes the 2023 CCAA regular-season championship.

With the championship, Cal State LA now earns the No. 1 seed for the CCAA Tournament and a first-round bye for the six-team tourney. The semifinals and finals will be held at Cal Poly Humboldt on Nov. 10-12.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead and scored both goals in the first 23 minutes of the game. Bryan Ortega gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead just 5:04 into the game. He scored his ninth goal of the season, which is second in the CCAA and he now has 22 points, which is also second in the conference. Simon Johanson and Oliver Diaz picked up assists on the goal.

Diaz then made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when he headed in a free kick from Jeppe Paulsen. It was the fifth goal of the season for Diaz and Paulsen picked up his fourth assist of the season. Diaz is now second on the team in scoring with 11 points.

Julian Aadlandsvik had another outstanding game. He made four saves to earn his 12th shutout of the season, which leads the nation.

Cal State LA had a 17-9 advantage in shots, including an 11-5 edge in the first half. Cal State LA also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks with four of them coming in the opening half.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
