No. 4 Golden Eagles Beat Toros To End Regular Season

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team put the finishing touches on its 2023 California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship with its ninth straight win Thursday over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The No. 4 Golden Eagles outlasted the Toros, 4-2, in a wildly entertaining contest in University Stadium. Cal State LA (15-1-1, 10-1 CCAA) won its ninth regular-season title with 30 points, finishing four points ahead of second-place Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles have been known for its outstanding defense this season, but Thursday's conference finale was an offensive battle for both schools and the score could have been much higher for both teams without exceptional play from Cal State LA goalkeeper Julian Aadlandsvik and Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Arturo Magana. Both goalies recorded six saves each, including a diving penalty shot save by Aadlandsvik in the first half.

The six goals in the game were scored by three players. Cal State LA's Aidan Wait and Tommaso Belli had two goals each, while Jhoel Sarraude had a pair of goals for the Toros (5-6-6, 2-5-4 CCAA).

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 20-17 advantage in shots and the action really picked up in the second half with the teams combining for 24 shots, 13 by the Toros and 11 by the Golden Eagles.

Wait opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he was set up right in front after a cross from Jeppe Paulsen, who had received a cross-field pass from Oscar Warne that started the scoring sequence.

The Toros, after having a penalty kick try saved, tied it at 1-1 in the 30th minute when Sarraude alertly got to a loose ball after a long throw-in into the box and slotted it into an empty net.

Belli, though, gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 halftime lead when he blasted a left-footed shot directly off a pass from Rene Cortez to the far post in the 43rd minute.

Cal State Dominguez Hills tied it up in the 76th minute when Sarraude got to a shot by Logan Kaufman that was blocked and fired it in for his second goal of the game and seventh of the season.

Belli then scored what turned out to be the game-winner when he won the ball near midfield and dribbled in alone before firing it into the net in the 77th minute.

Cal State LA added its final goal in the 89th minute when Wait scored his sixth goal of the season thanks to a brilliant run by Geovanni Antuna, who sent a beautiful pass to a wide-open Wait who calmly tapped it in for the score.

Cal State LA will now set its sights on the CCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles, as the No. 1 seed, drew a first-round bye and will advance straight to a semifinal game on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Cal Poly Humboldt. Cal State LA is the two-time defending conference tournament champion.
