ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team remained unbeaten in conference play on Friday, but won't come away happy after a 1-1 draw against Sonoma State at Sunrise Park in Rohnert Park.
The Golden Eagles (6-1-8, 3-0-6 CCAA) picked up a point and now have 15 with two California Collegiate Athletic Association games remaining. Cal State LA entered the day in a tie for third with Cal State San Bernardino, but has already slipped to fourth after Cal Poly Humboldt earned a win to get to 16 points. Other programs right on the Golden Eagles' heels have games remaining later on Friday.
Cal State LA got off to a tremendous start when
Erin Schrock scored just 3:10 into the contest, but the Golden Eagles were unable to get a second goal and Sonoma State (2-8-5, 0-6-3) got the equalizer with just 5:02 left in the game.
This was the first game between the two programs since Cal State LA beat Sonoma State, 1-0, in the finals of the CCAA Tournament last season.
Sonoma State had a 17-11 advantage in shots, including a 13-7 edge in the second half. Cal State LA had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks with all four corner kicks coming in the second half.
Taesja Paopao made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, including four in the first half. Lolo Retsky made four saves in goal for the Seawolves.
Schrock scored her third goal of the season and her third in the past four games to give the Golden Eagles the early lead. She now has five goals in her Cal State LA career.
Liliana Gonzalez continued her fine play of late and had the assist on the goal. She now has two assists in the past three games and has 12 goals and five assists in her Cal State LA career.
That goal stood up until Julia Betti got the equalizer in the 85th minute with her second goal of the season. Mia Smith-Solorio and Grace Ingalis picked up assists.
Shelby Melin had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Jassmin Ortiz and Schrock had two shots each. Betti had eight shots for the Seawolves.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a big road game at Cal Poly Humboldt at 11:30 a.m.
