Golden Eagles Pick Up A Huge Win At Humboldt

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked up a huge California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Sunday in a showdown with Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Golden Eagles scored just 23 seconds into the game and never looked back in a 3-0 win over the 'Jacks at College Creek Field. Cal State LA (7-1-8, 4-0-6 CCAA) remained unbeaten in conference play and jumped past Cal Poly Humboldt (11-4-2, 5-4-1 CCAA). The Golden Eagles now have 18 points and are tied for fourth with Cal State San Bernardino, one point back of third-place Chico State and two points ahead of sixth-place Cal Poly Humboldt and Stanislaus State with one game remaining in conference play.

The Golden Eagles stretched their overall unbeaten streak to 13 games in a row since their only loss of the season at Western Washington on Sept. 9.

Cal State LA got goals from Itzel Carbajal, Jassmin Ortiz and Liliana Gonzalez, two off them in the first 12 minutes of the game. The three goals are the most for the Golden Eagles since they got four in a 4-1 win over San Francisco State on Sept. 29. The defense was superb once again and Taesja Paopao made four saves for the team's ninth shutout of the season.

Cal State LA had a 10-9 advantage in shots, while both teams had three corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles struck for their first goal just 23 seconds into the game on a play started by a long pass from Jassmin Ortiz. Carbajal ran it down and executed a brilliant give-and-go with Erin Schrock before finishing just inside the right post from close range. It was Carbajal's first goal with the Golden Eagles, while Schrock picked up her second assist of the season. Schrock now has three goals and one assist in the last five games.

Cal State LA then made it 2-0 in the 12th minute with an alert goal from Ortiz. After a free kick landed in the box, Alice Hernandez was able to direct a shot toward goal that was deflected to Ortiz, who finished for her third goal of the season. Hernandez picked up her second assist of the season.

The Golden Eagles led 2-0 at haltime and kept up the pressure in the second period. Gonzalez did the scoring honors to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute on a play that started when Thiaz Hernandez sent a ball after a corner kick into the box. Destiny Moedano fired a shot off the crossbar and Gonzalez rushed to the ball and headed it in for her third goal of the season and 13th of her career. Moedano picked up her first assist of the season.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season at home on Thursday with a 2 p.m. contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
