Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Win Over Wildcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked a great time for one of its best performances of the season.

The Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals in a spectacular first half and made them stand up in a 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State Friday in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-1-6. 3-0-4 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to 10 games, but more importantly won for the first time in five games and picking up a huge three points in the conference race. The Golden Eagles had tied four straight games before Friday's big win.

The two goals were the most in a game since a 4-1 win over San Francisco State that opened the CCAA season for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA, which started the day tied for fourth with Chico State (8-5-1, 3-3-1 CCAA), jumped into a tie for third place with Cal Poly Humboldt with 13 points, two back of second-place Cal State San Marcos and six back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona at the end of day.

The Golden Eagles scored a pair of beautiful goals in the first half to take control of the contest against a very good Chico State team. Erin Schrock opened the scoring with her second game-winning goal in as many games in the ninth minute. Alice Hernandez sent in a shot from outside the box that Schrock deflected brilliantly inside the near post from close range.

Then, in the 37th minute, Shelby Melin completed a masterful give-and-go with Liliana Gonzalez and scored her fourth goal of the season with a strike to the far post. Gonzalez sent in a beautiful pass for her first assist of the season. She now has 28 points in her Cal State LA career.

That was it for the scoring, but both teams had some quality chances during a fast-paced and well-played contest. Taesja Paopao made six saves in goal for the Golden Eagles to post her seventh shutout of the season.

Emma Hoffman made three goals for the Wildcats.

Cal State LA had a 10-8 advantage in shots in the first half, while Chico State had an 8-3 edge in the second half. Chico State had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Shrock had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Gonzales, Melin and Jassmin Ortiz had two each.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a game against Stanislaus State at 11:30 a.m. at University Stadium.
