LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team remained unbeaten in conference play after a tie with Stanislaus State on a Sunday that saw the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings get even closer.
The Golden Eagles (6-1-7, 3-0-5 CCAA) battled the Warriors (6-5-4, 3-2-3 CCAA) to a 0-0 tie on Sunday and picked up a point to remain in a tie for third with Cal State San Bernardino. Both teams have 14 points, five back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State San Marcos is now just one point behind the Broncos with 18 points.
There is now a three-way tie for fifth place between Cal Poly Humboldt, Chico State and Cal State East Bay with 13 points and Stanislaus State is just one point behind that trio.
Three games remain in the regular season and six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Cal State LA stretched its unbeaten streak to 11 after the well-earned draw with Stanislaus State. Both teams feature outstanding defenses and quality scoring chances were hard to come by on Sunday. The Golden Eagles recorded their eighth shutout of the season and have permitted only seven goals all season.
The Golden Eagles were coming off a big 2-0 win over Chico State on Friday, but were unable to duplicate that offensive success on Sunday against Stanislaus State.
Cal State LA had a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had an edge in possession, but they also had to weather some second-half challenges from the Warriors before taking the final five shots of the match over the final 14 minutes.
Liliana Gonzalez had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, playing all 90 minutes and taking a game-high four shots.
Jassmin Ortiz was brilliant over 75 minutes and had three shots, while
Shelby Melin and
Destiny Moedano had two shots each. The defense, led by 90-minute performances from
Jaclyn Orozco, Moedano and
Thaiz Hernandez and 45 minutes each
Brianna Valdez and
Haley Clark, did not allow a shot on goal.
Taesja Paopao didn't record a save, but she was outstanding once again controlling the crease and snagging potentially dangerous crosses before they became shots.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a big conference match at Sonoma State at 12:30 p.m.
