Golden Eagles Open Indoor Season At Washington

SEATTLE, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's indoor track and field team had some promising performances Saturday in the Golden Eagles' season-opener at the University of Washington.

Eden Hahn finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.95 for the best individual performance at the University of Washington Indoor Preview. Alyssa Johnson also had a top-10 finish after placing seventh in the long jump with a mark of 17-9.75. Johnson recorded her best jump since her career best of 18-4.50 set in 2020 when she had the team's best marks in both the long jump and triple jump.

"Coming back from an injury I did better than I expected. I am happy with my results, but there is always room for improvement," Johnson said. "This meet showed me what I need to work on, and I am blessed to be able to compete. I am happy to have a team that supports, and pushes each other to be the best we can be. I'm excited to see what this season will bring. I expect to have a PR in the long jump, which is my main event, the 60, and the 200 in the next meet."

Vanessa Monrreal was 10th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:59.39.

Hahn led four Golden Eagles in the 60 while finishing 18th in 8.07, while Johnson was 24th in 8.24. Cleo Goodwin was 38th in 8.79 and Ogechi Ukaeje was 39th in 9.08.

Hahn led six Golden Eagles with her effort in the 200. Aazalet Danage was 14th in 26.51, Saminah Haddadd was 19th in 26.85, Isis Johnson was 28th in 27.27, Johnson was 31st in 27.38 and Ukaeje was 47th in 31.22.

"For my first indoor meet of the season, I believe I am off to a great start," Hahn said. "After not doing so well in the 60 meters, I made up for it in the 200. This meet showed me what I need to work on and I am blessed to have such an amazing support system. For the upcoming meets, I expect myself to not only get better and PR in the 60 and 200 meters, but to have a more positive and confident mindset as well. Our women's team definitely stepped the bar up and showed out. They all persevered through every challenge and every event and I am so proud of everyone. As the season goes on, I am excited to see the team excel and for everyone to see what our women's team is capable of."

Danage had the top time in the 400 while finishing 23rd in 61.36. Haddad was 24th in 61.61, Isis Johnson was 32nd in 64.40 and Riyanna Jackson was 36th in 67.43.

The 4x400 relay team was 15th with a time of 4:17.36.

"Competing at the University of Washington is always a great way to open up the season. This is a young group that will development nicely this season," Cal State LA head coach Tina Fernandes said. "Currently we do not have access to a track, because of maintenance being done, but we.have been creative and our team rose to the challenge. Although they are new to indoors, they were able to compete well. This meet allowed us to see what we need to work on. We are expecting nice improvements at our next meet."

Cal State LA will return to action on Jan. 27 at the New Mexico Team Open.
