LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team went back to a winning formula Thursday night in a non-conference contest against Concordia.
The Golden Eagles played outstanding defense and converted a second-half penalty kick to hand Concordia its first loss of the season, 1-0, in University Stadium. Cal State LA (2-1) also won its season-opener, 1-0, on a penalty kick.
On Thursday,
Erin Schrock was fouled while making a dangerous play in the box and
Shelby Melin knocked in the ensuing penalty kick for the second time this season in Cal State LA's second victory of the season. Concordia (2-1-1) was unbeaten in its first three games of the season.
Concordia had a 10-8 edge in shots, while Cal State LA had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Areli Reyes made three saves for the Golden Eagles and recorded her second shutout of the season. Riley Urquiza made three saves for Concordia.
Melin finished the match with three shots, while
Liliana Gonzalez had a pair of shots, both on goal.
Thaiz Hernandez,
Melody Landphear and
Miyah Coleman had one shot each.
Jadenn Carrillo had a match-high five shots for Concordia.
The only score of the game came in the 50th minute when a hard-working Schrock was taken down in the box and Melin converted the penalty try.
After taking the lead, the Golden Eagles did an outstanding job of preventing scoring chances. Reyes needed to make only one save in the second half and she was there to settle things down on Concordia's two second-half corner kicks.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. match against Simon Fraser.
