Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Golden Eagles See Lengthy Streaks Come To An End

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw a pair of lengthy unbeaten streaks come to an end Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

In a match between nationally-ranked opponents, No. 1 Cal State LA fell to No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, in a tightly-played contest in University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-1, 1-1 CCAA) had its 25-game unbeaten streak and its 26-game conference unbeaten streak snapped by the Toros (7-0-2, 1-0-1 CCAA).

The Golden Eagles hadn't dropped a game since a 1-0 loss at Cal Poly Pomona in a non-conference matchup on Sept. 25, 2021. Cal State LA responded by going 16-0-2 and finished the season by winning the NCAA Division II championship.

The Golden Eagles hadn't dropped a conference match since a 1-0 loss at UC San Diego on Oct. 19, 2018.

The game was decided on a perfectly-placed strike from the Toros' Martin Velasquez in the 68th minute. After taking a pass from Kennhy Lee, Velasquez dribbled to just outside the penalty box and rifled a shot just under the crossbar and just inside the near post for the only goal of the game.

Cal State LA had five shots at an equalizer down the stretch, but four of those tries missed the mark and the fifth, by Jacob Chong in the 89th minute, was saved by Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Sebastian Ascencio.

Ascencio had a pair of saves for the Toros, while Alvaro Unanua made four saves for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had a 13-7 edge in shots, including a 6-2 advantage in the first half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-0 advantage in the opening half.

Chong had a match-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Aidan Wait had two, including a free kick that just missed the mark in the 59th minute.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road match at Cal Poly Humboldt.
