LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team used a sensational second-half explosion to win Saturday's big matchup between nationally-ranked teams.
The No. 1 Golden Eagles exploded for five goals in a dynamic second half to beat No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona, 6-0, in a non-conference game between California Collegiate Athletic Association powers in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-0), the defending national champions, extended its unbeaten streak to 24 with the impressive victory.
The game turned dramatically in the second half when the Golden Eagles, after absorbing a sustained push from the Broncos (5-1-1), pounced on a defensive miscue in the 58th minute that seemed to open the floodgates.
Aidan Wait made the Broncos pay by hustling to steal the ball and loft it into an open net to extend a 1-0 halftime lead to 2-0. That started a barrage of four goals in a 17-minute span that put the game away.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, but couldn't get anything past All-American goalkeeper
Alvaro Unanua and
Julian Aadlandsvik, who combined for six saves and the shutout. Unanua made five saves, including an amazing kick save in the first half on a shot by Cal Poly Pomona's Jerry Ramirez and another great save in the second half on a hard shot he was able to leap and deflect over the crossbar and out of play.
Wait had a pair of goals to lead the way, while
Lucas Rosales,
Alex Rodriguez,
Anton Olofsson and
Oscar Warne each had one goal.
Rosales opened the scoring with a brilliant individual effort in the 28th minute. He took a hard shot that was blocked and got to the rebound before firing a blast inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
Cal Poly Pomona had some good moments of pressure in the first half and the Broncos were flying to start the second half, only to see the Golden Eagle defense survive every attack. Then Wait scored in the 58th minute to make it 2-0 and the Golden Eagles were the ones who grabbed the momentum.
Rodriguez made it 3-0 when
Carl Solli, after getting a pass from
Oliver Diaz, slipped it back to an onrushing Rodriguez, who fired a perfect shot just under the crossbar in the 65th minute. Then, less than three minutes later, Oloffson finished a dynamic passing sequence from Rodriguez to
Jeppe Paulsen with his first goal of the season to make it 4-0.
Wait scored his second goal of the game with a nice assist from Rodriguez to make it 5-0. Wait now leads the team in goals with four.
Warne finished the scoring in the 89th minute after
Bryan Ortega made a long run before eluding a defender and sliding in a pass to Warne who finished for his first goal of the season.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with its CCAA opener against Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 p.m.
