Lily Buggs Named To CCAA All-Tournament Team

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's Lily Buggs just accomplished something that hasn't been by a Golden Eagle since 2013.

Buggs, the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Freshman of the Year, was named to the five-player CCAA All-Tournament Team, the conference announced at the conclusion of the tournament. Buggs became the first player since Richelle Najera and Tessondra Williams were named to the All-Tournament team in 2013.

Buggs joined Cal State East Bay's Zhane Duckett (the tournament MVP), Delia Moore of Cal State East Bay, Akayla Hickson of Cal State San Marcos and Charity Gallegos of Chico State on the five-player All-TOurnament team.

Buggs was sensational in Cal State LA's two tournament games this weekend. First, she had a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles past Sonoma State, 57-52, in the first round. It was Cal State LA's first tournament win since 2014.

Then, she had 20 points and nine rebounds in another outstanding game as the Golden Eagles took a 12-point halftime lead before falling to eventual tournament champion Cal State East Bay in the semifinals, 74-63. Buggs had 17 points in the first half while helping the Golden Eagles to a 38-26 halftime lead.

Buggs, who also earned first-team All-CCAA honors, finished her first collegiate season in style. She wound up averaging 14.6 points per game, which was second on the team to teammate Nicole Flennaugh and she was also second on the team to the conference rebound leader Jada Johnson, another teammate with 8.3 rebounds per contest.

The Golden Eagles completed a historic season with plenty of optimism for the future. Cal State LA had one of the youngest teams in the conference and equaled a program-best third-place regular-season finish. The program earned a No. 3 seed for the CCAA Tournament, which also tied a Cal State LA record.

Buggs and Flennaugh both earned first-team All-CCAA honors, Johnson earned second-team recognition and Anai Washington received All-CCAA honorable mention. Buggs and Flennaugh have given the Golden Eagles back-to-back CCAA Freshmen of the Year.
