HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Cal State LA's beach volleyball team had another enjoyable day of competition on Friday, this time against junior college opponents.
The Golden Eagles beat Ventura College, 3-2, to start the day and then beat host Golden West College, 5-0, later in the day. The matches will not count as part of the Golden Eagles' NCAA record because only results against four-year institutions are tabulated.
In the opening match, Cal State LA got wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 pairs.
Ashley Dittmann and
Iane Henke beat Lexie Baloyo and Amelie Zubia, 21-16, 21-12,
Eliza Cannon and
Emily Elliott won in three sets against Savannah Marchese and Averi Carter, 20-22, 21-16, 15-13 at No. 2 pairs and
Jaden Grova and
Haley Roundtree beat Monica Montoya and Lexi Donnelly, 21-16, 21-23, 15-8.
Shelby Grubbs and
Allison Linder fell to Amaris Garcia and Katie Mulville at No. 3 pairs, 19-21, 22-20, 15-11 and
Malia Apodaca and
Beatriz Jimenez fell at No. 5 pairs to Grace Williams and Madelyn Grajeda, 21-9, 21-15.
In the next match against Golden West, the Golden Eagles won all five pairs.
Grubbs and Linder prevailed in the closest contest at No. 3 pairs, emerging with a win over Emily Heredia and Ryan Gaglio, 21-18, 20-22, 16-14.
Dittmann and Henke won at No. 1 pairs over Rachel Miller and Kate Griffin, 21-16, 21-17, Cannon and Elliott won at No. 2 pairs over Illiana Galindo and Adrianna Morales, 21-17, 21-14, Grova and Roundtree won at No. 4 pairs over Paige Phillips and Olivia Robertson, 21-18, 21-13 and
Kaili Vandenberg and
Talia Niu won at No. 5 pairs over Ari Ah-hoy and Cass Flores, 21-19, 21-13.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a pair of matches at Concordia - one against host Eagles and one against Pepperdine.
