AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team started well against Azusa Pacific on Monday in a match between PacWest Conference foes, but couldn't complete an upset bid.
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point, but the Cougars fought back and won five of the six singles contests to earn a 5-2 victory. No. 7 Azusa Pacific (2-1) won its 15th consecutive home match, but the victory didn't come without a battle.
Cal State LA (1-1) took two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The Golden Eagles fell at No. 1 doubles, but won at No. 2 doubles when
Berta Acero and
Noa Davico beat Azusa Pacific's Carolyn Brooner and April Wong, 6-4, and at No. 3 doubles, where
Savaughna Mayo and
Courtlyn Lam beat Lilla Plasek and Audrey Stewart, 6-4.
It was a different story in singles, where Cal State LA won just one point, at No. 4 singles, where Acero beat Wong, 6-3, 6-2.Â
Azusa Pacific earned straight-set victories in the other five contests. Davico fell to Nora Liga, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, Olmos fell to Madison Kane, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, Kurokawa fell to Brooner at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4,
Chelsey Ruiz fell to Plasek at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4 and
Taylor Barnes fell to Katherine Nguyen, 6-2, 6-0.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home match on Friday against Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m.
