LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team got its 2022 season off to a promising start with a victory over Westmont Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles really battled to earn the doubles point and then took five of the six singles contests to beat Warriors, 6-1, at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
The doubles contests were highly competitive to open the match and Cal State LA earned the point thanks to a thrilling tiebreaker victory for
Noa Davico and
Berta Acero at No. 2 doubles over Westmont's Christine Hemry and Olivia Madarang. Cal State LA jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker, saw Westmont cut the margin to 6-4 before Acero smacked the match-winner for the 7-6 victory. The other two doubles matches were split with Cal State LA's No. 1 doubles team of
Sarah Olmos and
Sakura Kurokawa prevailing over Westmont's Rachal Jackson and Emily Peterson, 6-3 and Westmont's Francesca Aguirre and Sophia Ostovany earning a 6-1 victory over Cal State LA's
Chelsey Ruiz and
Courtlyn Lam.
In singles, the best match of the day was at No. 1 singles, where Jackson rallied to outlast Davico, 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 for the Warriors' lone point of the match.
Olmos beat Peterson at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, Kurokawa beat Hemry at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1, Acero beat Madarang at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1, Ruiz beat Ostovany, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 singles and
Taylor Barnes beat Kaley Houshmand, 6-1, 6-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a road match against Azusa Pacific.
