LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team returned from its holiday break and put a nice bow on 2022 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles got a record-tying 3-point performance from
Nicole Flennaugh and another double-double from
Lily Buggs in a 78-62 win over Point Loma. Cal State LA (6-4) broke open a tight game at halftime by outscoring Point Loma (6-8), 45-30, in the second half.
Flennaugh led the way, tying her own program single-game record with nine 3-pointers on her way to a season-high 29 points. Flennaugh now has a conference-leading 36 successful 3-pointers through 10 games and snapped a two-game stretch when she didn't hit a 3-pointer in games against San Francisco State and Cal State San Marcos. It's actually the second time Flennaugh has made nine 3-pointers in a game this season, hitting nine in an exhibition win at Pepperdine in November.
Buggs continued her outstanding play this season with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and came alive in the third quarter when she had 10 points and combined with Flennaugh (nine points on three 3-pointers) for 19 points for a 26-18 advantage in the period that extended a slim 33-32 halftime lead to 59-50.
Jada Johnson also had a big game with eight points and 12 rebounds. The California Collegiate Athletic Association's leading rebounder last season, Johnson had her second-best rebounding game of the season. She had 14 rebounds in a game at UC Riverside.
Haylee Saurette had 20 points to lead Point Loma, while Allie Carreon had 12 points and Ellie Turk had 11.
Silivia Fonongaloa had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Olivia Hodges had five points and three rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 43.9 percent for the game (29-of-66) and was 9-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were only 11-of-22 from the free-throw line. Point Loma shot 38.7 percent for the game (24-of-62) and was 8-of-22 from 3-point range. The Sea Lions were just 6-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 49-35 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 21 for Point Loma.
Flennaugh had four 3-pointers and 16 points in the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles trailed, 22-18, after one period. Turk gave the Sea Lions the four-point lead with a running, deep 3-pointer at the buzzer.
A layup by Buggs and a late free throw by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 33-32 lead at halftime.
The Sea Lions took a six-point lead in the third quarter at 43-37 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Saurette, but Cal State LA responded with a quick 11-2 run and took a 48-45 lead after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh. Carreon tied it at 48-48 with a 3-pointer for the Sea Lions, but a pair of free throws by Buggs and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Another 3-pointer by Flennaugh, a free throw from
Ashley Orozco and an offensive rebound basket by Hodges pushed the lead to 59-50 entering the final period.
An offensive rebound and basket by Fonongaloa made the lead 61-50 in the opening minutes of the final period and Point Loma never got closer the rest of the way. After the Sea Lions made it 67-58 with seven minutes to play, the Golden Eagles got free throws from Hodges and
Raya Smith, a jumper from Buggs, a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a steal and layup by Buggs to fuel a 9-0 run that put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will resume its conference schedule this Sunday, Jan. 1, at Cal State San Marcos at 1 p.m.
