KANSAS CITY, MO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team continued its amazing run of success in 2022 and had three players earn All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced on Thursday.

Daniel Garcia earned first-team honors, Alvaro Unanua earned second-team honors and Bryan Ortega earned third-team honors on the 34-player squad announced by the United Soccer Coaches. Unanua was one of two players to earn All-America recognition for a second straight season.

Cal State LA finished its season with a 15-2-3 overall record, won a California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title for a second straight year and was the No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA Super Region 4 for a third straight season.

Garcia's selection to the first team gives Cal State LA a first-team All-American from the United Soccer Coaches for a third straight season and the three players chosen gives the Golden Eagles a fourth straight season with multiple All-Americans on the United Soccer Coaches team.

It also marks the second season in a row that the Golden Eagles have had three All-Americans. Last season, Morton Bjoershol, Unanua and David Elizaga were named All-Americans by the D2 Conference Commissioners Association in voting by the country's sports information directors. Garcia earned third-team All-American honors from that group earlier this week.

The three United Soccer Coaches All-Americans for the Golden Eagles are the most in a single season for the program since 2009 when they had four players named by the coaches.

Garcia was sensational for the Golden Eagles in his one year with the program. He was third on the team in scoring with four goals and five assists for 13 points and he was one of four players to start all 20 games for the Golden Eagles in 2022.

Garcia was named the CCAA Midfielder of the Year and also earned first-team All-Region honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and D2 CCA. He was also named the Most Valuable Offensive Player at the CCAA Tournament and received first-team All-CCAA honors.

Unanua completed an outstanding two-year career with Cal State LA and a remarkable four-year collegiate career that saw him win two national championships (one with Charleston in 2019 against Cal State LA and a second with Cal State LA in 2021 against Charleston), earn two All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches (both while at Cal State LA) and finish with an overall record of 58-4-7.

With Cal State LA, Unanua was 33-4-6 and was sensational in the 2021 postseason, which he capped off with back-to-back shutouts against Nova Southeastern and Charleston in the national championships. His unbelievable performance in the penalty-kick shootout in the national semifinals against Nova Southeastern - when he made three consecutive stops to enable to the Golden Eagles to prevail despite missing their first two attempts - has to go down as one of the greatest individual performances in Cal State LA history.

In 2022, Unanua started all 20 games for the Golden Eagles and allowed only 14 goals with seven solo shutouts and three combined shutouts. He had a goals against average of 0.73 and a saves percentage of .833. He was named the CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year for a second straight season and earned first-team All-West Region honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and D2 CCA.

Ortega, meanwhile, flourished in his first season with the program after transferring to Cal State LA from Cerritos College. He led the team in scoring with six goals and five assists for 17 points and appeared in all 20 games with 13 starts. Previously, he earned first-team All-West Region honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and D2 CCA and also received first-team All-CCAA honors.

Garcia was one of three players from the CCAA to earn first-team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches. He was joined by Sulaiman Bah of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cesar Ruvalcaba of Cal Poly Pomona. Unanua was one of two CCAA players on the second team and was joined by Cal Poly Pomona's Melvyn Perez Cortez and Ortega was one the only one from the conference to earn third-team recognition.

After posting a record of 15-2-3 in 2022, Cal State LA is now 33-4-6 over the past two seasons, 52-5-9 over the past three seasons and 67-8-12 over the past four seasons with one national championship, two national championship game appearances, two Super Region 4 championships, two CCAA regular-season championships and three CCAA Tournament titles.
