CHICO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found success in its first road game of the season.
The Golden Eagles, who played their first seven games of the season in University Gym, beat Chico State, 67-65, on Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (4-4, 1-1 CCAA) got some big performances from some familiar faces to post its first conference win of the season.Â
Returning all-conference standout
Alexander Sokol led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points to go along with four rebounds, while
Adrease Jackson had 16 points and seven rebounds in his second outing of the season.
Jojo Murphy led Chico State (2-4, 1-1 CCAA) with 19 points, while Brennan Wheeler had 13 points.
Payton Moore had 14 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Dominic Escobar had 12 points and a pair of steals.
Cal State LA shot just under 50 percent for the game while making 25-of-51 field-goal attempts (49.0 percent). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-17 from 3-point range and made 11-of-21 free-throw attempts. Cal State LA's defense held Chico State to just 37.7 percent shooting (23-of-61) and the Wildcats were just 7-of-28 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was outrebounded by just one, 35-34, and committed 12 turnovers to 11 for the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles started well and led by as many as eight points in the first half, 23-15, after a layup by
Deuce Walker. Moore kept the lead at 27-21 with a jumper late in the half and the Golden Eagles settled for a 27-23 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles fell behind by 10 points, 43-33, with 14 minutes to go before staging an impressive comeback. The Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run behind a 3-pointer by Sokol, two free throws by
Jaden Lazo, a free throw by Moore and another 3-pointer by Sokol to pull to within one point at 43-42.Â
Another 3-pointer by Sokol gave the Golden Eagles the lead at 48-45 with nine minutes to go and a basket by Moore pushed the lead to 50-45.
Chico State took its last lead at 58-56 after a three-point play by Miles Daniels, but Jackson tied the game at 58-58 with a basket and 3:50 to go and baskets by Escobar and Sokol gave the Golden Eagles a 62-58 lead with two minutes left. Escobar hit another jumper to make it 64-58 and a pair of free throws by Jackson kept the margin at 66-60 with 40 seconds remaining.Â
The Golden Eagles saw their lead cut to one point, 66-65, but Escobar hit a free throw with 18 seconds to go and the defense took it from there, forcing a missed 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday in an afternoon game at Stanislaus State.
