West Region Champs Earn All-America Recognition

LEXINGTON, KY -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team, which will be competing in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 on Thursday, picked up some major awards from the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday.

Iane Henke became the program's first-ever AVCA national Freshman of the Year, a tremendous achievement for one of the key players in Cal State LA's march to the Elite Eight. She also received AVCA All-America honorable mention.

Emily Elliott, meanwhile, earned second-team AVCA All-America honors after a sensational season that saw her emerge as one of the top players in the country. She earned first-team All-CCAA and first-team All-West Region honors as well as All-Tournament honors at the CCAA and West Region championships. Elliott had 49 kills in 10 sets while leading the Golden Eagles past Sonoma State, Central Washington and Chaminade in the West Regional.

Elliott becomes just the 14th player in program history to earn either first, second or third-team All-America honors and the first sophomore. Only three players have been on one of the top three teams more than once.

Elliott and Henke become the first pair of Golden Eagles to earn All-America honors since 2015 when Iona Lofrano earned second-team honors and JamieAnn Bero earned honorable mention.

Elliott leads the team heading into the national championship quarterfinals with 352 kills and 413 points. She is also third on the team in aces with 29 and third in blocks with 61.

Henke is second on the team in kills with 316 and second in points with 406.5. She leads the team in aces with 62 and digs with 305. She is also fourth in blocks with 53.

Three players from the West Region earned first-team honors - Alaska Anchorage's Eve Stephens and Ellen Floyd and Cal Poly Pomona's Daisy Duke. Elliott was the only West Region player to earn second-team honors, while Point Loma's Abi Nua was on the third team. Henke was one of 12 West Region players, including four from the CCAA, to earn honorable mention.

Cal State LA is seeded fourth in the national championships and will face No. 5 Gannon on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Seattle Pacific.
