RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got some late-game heroics from
Nicole Flennaugh to send a contest at UC Riverside into overtime, but the extra time was not kind to the Golden Eagles.
Flennaugh hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of regulation, but the Golden Eagles were outscored, 11-5, in the overtime period and fell to the Highlanders, 58-52, Wednesday night in the SRC at UC Riverside. Cal State LA (2-2) lost its second straight decision after a 2-0 beginning to the season.
The Golden Eagles, after building a 29-20 halftime lead, found themselves trailing 47-41 with less than a minute to play, but Flennaugh hit back-to-back 3-pointers - both with assists from
Lily Buggs - to send the game into overtime. A layup by
Jada Johnson with an assist from Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 49-47 lead in the first minute of the overtime period, but the Golden Eagles managed only three points the rest of the way and UC Riverside (1-5) got the victory.
Yesenia Smith led the Golden Eagles with 13 points, all in the first half, while Flennaugh had eight points and five steals. Buggs had seven points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Jordan Webster had 19 points and eight rebounds for UC Riverside.
Jada Johnson had a game-high 14 rebounds and three points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had a tough night offensively and shot just 28.8 percent for the game (21-of-73) and was just 5-of-16 from 3-point range and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line. In the overtime period, Cal State LA was just 2-of-12 in overtime and missed its last nine shots. UC Riverside shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) and was 2-of-10 from 3-point range. The Highlanders were 16-of-21 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 51-41 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 20 for UC Riverside.
The Golden Eagles had their most success in the second quarter when they outscored the Highlanders, 22-12, to take a 29-20 halftime lead. Cal State LA trailed 18-13, but outscored UC Riverside, 16-2, over the final four minutes of the second quarter.
Yesenia Smith hit three 3-pointers in the period and
Ashley Orozco made a late layup after a steal from Smith to give the Golden Eagles the nine-point halftime edge.
Cal State LA, though, was outscored, 17-5, in the third period to fall behind, 37-34, and trailed by as many as six points in the fourth quarter before Flennaugh's late 3-pointers.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 1 in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Chico State.
