Golden Eagles Post An Impressive Win Over Sunbirds

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in an impressive performance Tuesday in its final non-conference game of the season.

The Golden Eagles executed their offense in fine fashion and beat Fresno Pacific, 83-73, in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-3) won its second straight game after shooting 55 percent and holding the lead for nearly the entire game. The Golden Eagles led 41-32 at halftime and built leads as large as 16 points in the second half. Fresno Pacific (1-3) was able to pull within six points with 4:09 to go, but the Golden Eagles responded with a quick 6-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Payton Moore and Shane Bell had 16 points each to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures, while Jared Pearre had 11 points and Deuce Walker had 10.

Mike Mensah had a game-high 21 points for Fresno Pacific, while Darrin Person had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Dominic Escobar had nine points and five rebounds, while Alexander Sokol had eight points and Kaden Rasheed had seven points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA was 32-of-58 for the game (55.2 percent) and 8-of-22 from 3-point range (36.4 percent). The Golden Eagles were also 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Fresno Pacific was 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) and 9-of-22 from 3-point range (40.9 percent). The Sunbirds were also 22-of-25 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 33-27, and forced 14 turnovers while committing only eight.

Both teams got off to explosive starts offensively with Mensah knocking down three 3-pointers in the first three minutes and the Golden Eagles countering with five 3-pointers from Moore, Walker, Bell, Moore again and Walker again to take a 17-11 lead. Fresno Pacific went on an 8-0 run to take the lead, but baskets by Kyjuan Cannady, Rasheed and Jaden Lazo and a 3-pointer by Sokol gave the Golden Eagles a 26-19 lead.

Fresno Pacific cut the margin to one point at 33-32, but the Golden Eagles scored the final eight points of the half on a layup by Moore, a jumper by Rasheed, a basket by Pierre and a jumper by Moore just before the buzzer to stake the Golden Eagles to a 41-32 halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by Bell gave the Golden Eagles a 48-34 lead and, after the Sunbirds closed to within 50-42, the Golden Eagles surged to a 59-43 lead following a 9-1 run completed by a steal by Cannady and a layup by Lazo.

A three-point play by Pierre made it 64-48 with eight minutes to go, but Fresno Pacific went on a 14-4 run to make it 68-62 with four minutes left. Bell stopped the run with a layup, Moore scored on a layup and Bell made a dunk to push the lead back up to 74-62 with two minutes left. The Golden Eagles led by at least eight points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest against Cal State San Marcos.
