Golden Eagles Win Second Straight Game In Irvine

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with another impressive win at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge hosted by Concordia.

The Golden Eagles got another outstanding game from Lily Buggs and beat Biola, 69-49. at CU Arena. Cal State LA (2-0) led 36-20 at halftime and 53-29 after three quarters in the win. Buggs had her second double-double in as many games with 23 points and 12 rebounds. 

Ashley Orozco added 13 points and Olivia Hodges had eight points and five rebounds.

Laila Walker had 13 points for Biola (0-2).

Silivia Fonongaloa had seven points and three rebounds and Nicole Flennaugh had five points, one assist and one steal.

Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills both went 2-0 for the CCAA against their PacWest counterparts. The Golden Eagles beat Concordia on Friday, 81-74.

Cal State LA shot 47.4 percent for the game (27-of-57) and just 25 percent from 3-point range (3-of-12). Biola shot just 30.5 percent (18-of-59) and was just 6-of-33 from 3-point range. Cal State LA also had a huge rebounding edge, 43-21.

Cal State LA took a quick 6-0 lead on baskets by Flennaugh, Orozco and Buggs, but Biola rallied to take an 11-9 lead after a 3-pointer by Madi Chang. The Golden Eagles made quick work of the deficit, tying the game on a pair of Buggs free throws and then taking a 15-11 lead at the end of the quarter after baskets by Raya Smith and Hodges.

The Golden Eagles broke the game open in the second quarter, taking a double-digit lead after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh at 25-13 and eventually building a 36-20 lead by halftime.

Cal State LA took a 48-27 lead midway through the third quarter and built the advantage to 53-29 by the end of the period after a jumper in the lane by Fonongaloa.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 25 points in the final quarter.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home game against PacWest favorite Azusa Pacific on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
