SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team, the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champions, found out its opponent for Friday's semifinal CCAA Tournament match.
The No. 1 seeded Golden Eagles (21-5), after earning a first-round bye, will face No. 5 Sonoma State (20-7) in one of two semifinals at the Sports Center at Cal State San Marcos. The Seawolves were four-set winners over No. 4 seed Cal State East Bay in a first-round match on Thursday. No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino will face No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona in the other semifinal with the winners to square off for the conference tournament title on Saturday. Cal State San Bernardino also earned a first-round bye, while Cal Poly Pomona beat No. 6 seed Stanislaus State on Thursday.
Cal State LA will be making its seventh appearance in the conference tournament, which started in 2015. The Golden Eagles are 5-6 overall in six previous appearances and seeking their first tournament title. Cal State LA reached the tournament championship match in 2019 and fell in five sets to Cal State San Bernardino.
This is the third straight year the Golden Eagles will be facing Sonoma State in the tournament. Cal State LA won in straight sets in a first-round match in 2021 (25-23, 25-13, 25-16) and in four sets in a semifinal contest in 2019 (25-20, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21). Both those matches were played at Cal State San Bernardino. Cal State LA also beat the Seawolves in four sets in 2017 in a first-round match (25-23, 29-27, 18-25, 25-23), while Sonoma State won in four sets in a first-round match in 2016 (12-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23). Cal State LA is 3-1 all-time in CCAA Tournament match against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles faced the Seawolves once during the regular season and posted a 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 victory in Los Angeles on Oct. 15.
Cal State LA enters the match on a four-match winning streak and has gone 19-2 since beginning the season with a 2-3 mark.
Cal State LA was well-represented on the All-CCAA team announced on Wednesday.
Juan Figueroa was named the CCAA Coach of the Year and
Emily Elliott and
Iane Henke earned first-team honors.
Eliza Cannon and
Ashley Dittmann earned second-team honors and
Shelby Grubbs,
Ayjah Landers and
Jameson Sanders received honorable mention.
