Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team turned in a complete effort Thursday and picked up a much-needed California Collegiate Athletic Association win against Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles allowed only one shot and
Tommaso Belli scored his first two goals of the season to highlight a 2-0 victory at The Cage. No. 12 Cal State LA (8-1-2, 2-1-2 CCAA) put an end to a three-game winless streak (1-0-2) and picked up a valuable three points with the win.
The defending national champions didn't allow a shot in the opening half and the only Cal State San Marcos attempt - in the 69th minute - was saved by All-American goalkeeper
Alvaro Unanua, who stood tall in the Golden Eagles' sixth shutout of the season.
Belli opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal that started because of outstanding pressure from
Jacob Chong, who prompted a poor clearance attempt from the goalkeeper. The attempt was stpolen by
A'Tonal Torres down the right flank and he promptly centered the ball where it went past Chong to Belli, who fired a left-footed shot into the net for his first goal of the season.
The assist was the first of the season for Torres and the second of the year for Chong.
Good pressure helped produce the second goal, also from Belli, in the 56th minute.
Aidan Wait forced a failed clearance that was corraled by Torres, who quickly passed to a wide-open Belli, who dribbled into the box and shot inside the near post for the insurance tally.
In addition to Belli's two shots, Chong had a pair of shots and
Marlon Radel,
Andrew Portis and
Oliver Diaz had one shot each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 11:30 a.m.Â
